To put the device into historical perspective, Seagate said that its new 4TB Desktop HDD is nearly 800,000 times larger than the first desktop drive the company introduced in 1979. It supports more than 800,000 photos, 450 hours of high-definition video or more than 1 million songs.

The high-capacity drive, priced at about $205 at NewEgg, TigerDirect and Best Buy, is designed for many uses, including workstations, home offices and small-business and home storage users.

The Seagate 4TB Desktop HDD’s data rate averages about 146MB per second. Thanks to the device’s low-power consumption design, Seagate claims it saves 35 percent in power consumption over competitors such as WD, Buffalo and Lenovo/EMC. Seagate’s home-developed OptiCache IT also has been incorporated into the 4TB HDD.
